Substance Use Disorders: Prevention, Promising Practices, and Ethical Considerations

Northwest Regional Primary Care Association invites you to submit an abstract for consideration to present as part of a 2019 Webinar Series Substance Use Disorders: Prevention, Promising Practices, and Ethical Considerations.


General Information: The 2019 webinar series will address clinical and operational topics related to Substance Use Disorder/Opioid Use Disorder prevention, treatment, and ethics. Monthly 60 minute online trainings will blend didactic and interactive formats and provide opportunities to share ideas and ask questions.


Submission Deadline: Monday, December 31, 2018.


Abstract Notification: Notifications of selected abstracts will be sent via email or phone in January. If multiple presenters are listed, the individual submitting the abstract (the primary presenter) will be notified.


Abstract Selection: Abstracts are selected on the basis of quality and clarity of the content, subject relevance, and strength of learning objectives. NWRPCA promotes peer-to-peer learning, therefore presentations facilitated by community health providers will be given priority. Abstracts should explain specific activities, methods, or techniques that will be used to facilitate participant engagement as well as applicable resources and/or tools that will be made available to attendees. Presentations that feature case studies, skills demonstration, examples of concept implementation, and subject matter expertise collaboration will be highly rated.


Content Areas: Abstracts should examine current programs, practices, Substance Use Disorder/Opioid Use Disorder, specifically:

  • Addiction basics (brain chemistry, cycle of addiction, types of addiction, addiction as illness, generational cycles, self-medicating)
  • Talking with patients about addiction (language, terminology, skills demonstration)
  • Harm Reduction (define, medical perspective, practical/concrete examples, case studies)
  • Provider self-awareness and bias, ethics of working w/addiction
  • Prevention
  • Medication Assisted Treatment (define, state-specific information, operational implications, components of MAT waiver)
  • Special populations (rural vs. urban, homeless, veterans, various cultures, forensics)
  • Youth SUD (systems, family treatment, brain development/chemistry)
  • 42 CFR and HIPAA
  • Vicarious trauma (provider burn-out, defining and celebrating patient success)
  • SBIRT
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Pain management (define pain, suffering, emotional/physical, medication alternatives)
  • SUD and medical conditions (impact, medication interactions, co-occurring treatment)

II. Submission Process

  1. Step 1: Setup Session

    The following items are required for submission.
    • Workshop Title
    • Submitter Full Name and Email
    • Preferred Language for Presentation: English, Spanish, or Either
      Please note that simultaneous interpretation services will not be available in all breakout sessions.
    • Session Content Areas
    • Comments
      Explanation for duration or language preference selected, if needed. Can you make your presentation longer or shorter?
    • Attestation of ownership
      Applicants must attest to the following:
      1. There are no copyrighted figures, images, or content in my abstract.
      2. If copyrighted figures, images or content are contained in my abstract, I have obtained necessary permission from the copyright owner.
      3. I affirm that I and all others listed as authors contributed substantively to the writing, review, and work described by this abstract, and further affirm that it was not prepared or written by anyone not listed as an author. I herewith grant Northwest Regional Primary Care Association a royalty-free, irrevocable, nonexclusive permission to use, reproduce, publish, translate, distribute, and display the abstract content.
  2. Step 2: Session Abstract

    Session Abstract Guidelines:

Abstracts should explain specific activities, methods, or techniques that will be used to facilitate participant engagement as well as applicable resources and/or tools that will be made available to attendees. Presentations that feature case studies, skills demonstration, examples of concept implementation, and subject matter expertise collaboration will be highly rated.

    Abstracts should describe the role of presenters in relation to the proposed topic, abstract development, and presentation. NWRPCA promotes peer-to-peer learning, therefore presentations facilitated by community health providers will be given priority.
  3. Step 3: Learning Objectives

    Please enter one Learning Objective per text box. Learning objectives should be clearly stated, measurable, and attainable. Below are examples of strong Learning Objectives:
    1. Assess the common health care needs of farmworkers.
    2. Identify barriers to accessing health care experienced by farmworkers.
    3. List three best practices for providing health care to farmworkers.
  4. Step 4: Session Description

    The Session Description should be a short summary of the Session Abstract. This will be used for marketing materials if the abstract is selected.
  5. Step 5: Presenters

    One primary presenter is required.
    • Identify and add a returning presenter using email address or last name to search the database.
    • If the person you are looking for is not found, select 'Not Found' from the search results and enter the presenter's information
  6. Step 6: Resume

    All presenters are required to upload a resume.
  7. Step 7: Confirmation

    • Review your submission on this page.
    • If you are satisfied, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the 'Conclude Submission' button.
    • To edit your submission, click the step you would like to update on the menu to the left of the screen. Please note that you are able to make changes to your submission until the submission deadline.
